Muslim Mayor: “Homosexuals are normal people like all of us.”

The Netherlands is often considered quite the liberal nation. But, it is also the location of some internal strife when it comes to Muslims and immigrants, many of who are much more conservative than the generally liberal nation. But, one Muslim Mayor sees the strife differently and is reaching out to his Muslim constituency. The Freethinker has a great summary of the situation in the Netherlands. Here’s a snapshot of the mayor’s words:

For cultural or religious reasons, some people reject homosexuals and compare them to animals. They don’t see homosexuals as humans. These people can be orthodox Christians, Muslims or immigrants. I always say: your freedom to be an orthodox Muslim is the same as that of a homosexual to be homosexual. Freedom is guaranteed in the constitution of the Netherlands.
